Rats have long been known as the more notorious of pests, being involved in the spread of major diseases in the past, and with a reputation for destroying and spoiling food supplies. Rats exist on almost all of the world’s continents, spread during years of stowing away on ships.
“ They are also likely to appear in great numbers in cities such as Sydney, due to high population density resulting a large
potential for food in a small area. ”
If you are in need of rat control, Sydney, or rat removal, Sydney, Nationwide Pest Control is ready and able to help you with any of your rat control needs!
There are two main species of rat that cause trouble within Australia, and these are the Brown Rat (or common rat) and the Black Rat. Both are introduced species that can cause havoc in private residences and businesses. The Black Rat is, as the name suggests, black in colour. It feeds primarily on fruits and is extremely agile. The Brown rat also has a colouring matching its name, preferring to live on the ground or in burrows, feeding on cereals.
It can be somewhat difficult to tell the difference between a rat and a mouse, but there are some indicators. The most obvious indicator is size. Rats are far bigger than mice, in both the size of their bodies and their tails, with mice often being between 7-10cm long, whereas rats vary from 16-20cm.
Having rats in a home can vary from an inconvenience to outright health danger. Rats eat a wide variety of substances, gnawing on walls and electrical wires as readily as on any unprotected food. This can cause expensive damage to your property, and consumed food will be contaminated and converted into foul droppings, which will be left on surfacesor near foods, spreading contamination leading to health risks.
“ Rats will also urinate wherever they can, leading to a foul smell permeating the area. ”
The biggest health risks rats pose, however, is due to their status as disease carriers, which they spread through their droppings. Rats are well known as past carriers of bubonic plague, and whilst that is eliminated now, rats can still carry infectious diseases that could severely impair your or your family’s health.
Rats are very social creatures, and where there is one there will often be many, many more. Noticing the foul smell of their urine and droppings, finding gnawed objects and foodstuffs around the home, hearing them scuttling behind the walls and simply seeing many rats are all indicators of a rat infestation, and due to the health hazards of such infestations they should be dealt with immediately.
These pests can casue great amounts of damage to property and health, so dealing with them quickly is paramount. We have used their services for approximately 3 years and have always been very happy with their service. We take advantage of their “green” program, meaning that they use an environmentally and pet-friendly spray in our home; it leaves very little odor afterwards and leaves no residue on our hardwood floors.
